Privacy Policy
Deadbook — Last updated: October 2026
Deadbook ("we", "our", "the app") is a memorial platform for pets. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Deadbook, you agree to the practices described below.
Information We Collect
- Account information: When you sign in with Apple, we receive your name and a private relay email address (or your real email, depending on your Apple ID settings). If you don't sign in, you're assigned an anonymous account automatically.
- Content you create: Pet names, photos, written stories, and any text you submit to create a memorial.
- Location: With your permission, we detect your approximate location (city and country) to tag memorials and let you filter content by area. We do not store precise GPS coordinates — only the resolved city/country name.
- Website visits: On deadbook.app we count page visits with PostHog (EU servers): the pages opened, the referring site, the country and the type of device. We do not use cookies, do not record your screen and do not link visits to your name.
- Candles on the website: When you light a candle on a memorial page at deadbook.app, we store a one-way code made from your IP address and browser, so each visitor can light one candle per memorial. We cannot turn this code back into your IP address.
- Usage data: Basic technical information (such as device type and app version) needed to keep the app running reliably.
How We Use Your Information
- To create, display, and share memorials within the app's community feed.
- To generate AI-assisted memorial stories based on the notes you provide, using Anthropic's Claude API. The notes you submit are sent to Anthropic solely to generate this text and are not used to train Anthropic's models.
- To let other users see who posted a memorial and where it's from (if location sharing is enabled).
- To maintain the security and integrity of the app (e.g., preventing duplicate candle-lighting).
Who We Share Data With
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers that power the app:
- Google Firebase — hosting, authentication, database, and file storage.
- Anthropic — AI text generation for memorial stories.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple authentication.
- PostHog — anonymous website visit statistics (EU hosting).
Content you post (pet name, story, photo, and the name associated with your account) is visible to other users of the app in the public community feed, unless you choose not to sign in with a named account.
Data Retention & Deletion
Your memorials remain stored until you delete them or close your account. You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us at the email below.
Children's Privacy
Deadbook is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Your Choices
- You can deny location access; the app will still work, with manual location entry.
- You can decline to sign in with Apple and use the app anonymously, though this limits some community features.
- You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your data at any time.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected with an updated "Last updated" date above.
